“I first had partial dentures following a sporting accident when I was 14, and the experience put me off dentists for life! I saw dental surgeries as conveyer belts where teeth were pulled out, and so I stopped going. My teeth got worse and worse, and so I got full dentures, which I have had for about 25 years. That’s a long time to put up with using Polygrip everyday, not being able to eat apples and other fruit properly, having nuts and pips get under the dentures, and avoiding eating certain foods altogether. I got to 60 and, because of the shrinkage of my gums and lips, I was starting to look a lot older than I was and I just wanted to get something done.
Sharad was great – completely calm and professional, he instilled confidence, and he explained everything to me and answered all my questions. He said that there wasn’t enough of my own bone in the upper jaw to take the implants and he would have to graft some from my lower jaw together with some synthetic bone into my upper jaw.
It took me just a couple of weeks to consider the options and then I went to see Sharad and told him that I was ready to go ahead – I wanted a complete set of permanent implants in both my upper and lower jaws, and so we began straight away.
I had a CT scan of my mouth, which was used to analyse exactly where to put the implants, and a set of moulds was made. Sharad said he had to be careful to avoid certain nerves, but using the CT scan he would be able to do this.
I was a little nervous and told Sharad that I did not want to be awake and aware of what was going on, so I had conscious sedation for each procedure, but I trusted Sharad completely. There was some swelling and bruising when the implants were fitted and this was to be expected, but absolutely no pain or discomfort whatsoever during any part of the treatment.
The final part of the treatment, fitting the upper teeth, only took an hour, and when I woke up it was done. There was no swelling or bruising, and I had a roast chicken dinner that night, without pain, and without any of the problems that I’d had before. Delicious!”
